Jonathan and Sol Levin

On a beautiful, early October afternoon this charming couple became man and wife.

We met at 11:00, choose a spot right beneath the "Ruins" at Tower Grove Park and began the small intimate ceremony. Have you spotted the squirrel?

This new bride was such a joy to photograph not only because she's so photogenic but also because of her fun loving spirit.

Sol's father flew in from Argentina for the wedding and one of the young ladies interpreted the ceremony for him.

Did I mention that I’ve known Jonathan since he was a little boy and that his father is my old pastor.  That’s probably a part of why this wedding was such a joy to photograph. Congratulations Jonathan and Sol!

Here’s a slideshow I put together with more images from this gorgeous day.  The song is by an artist named                                                              JJ Heller called Where I Land.

Independence Day

This past Monday we as a nation celebrated The 4th of July, Independence Day.  There were barbecues, games, festivities and fireworks. I can only speak for myself when I say that the meaning of all the excitement has escaped me.  That is until Sunday, when my husband gave a small history lesson at church as an introduction to his sermon that morning. I have a vague recollection from my high school days about the history of our country and the founding of this great nation.  I remember that Columbus discovered America in 1492 but after that sadly things get a little foggy.  What can I say it’s been, well, a lot of years since my high school days and unfortunately at the time I didn’t care. Now that I’m older, I have an appreciation for what our founding fathers went through as they fought and some even died for the freedoms we now posses.  Others have done the hard work so that I can live in a country that is free.  And for that, I’m am eternally grateful.

Here is the first and last verses from our National Anthem

United States of America

The Star Spangled Banner

Oh, say! can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming;
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:
Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust”:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand

Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!

Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land

Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!

Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,

And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave

O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

On Sept. 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key peered through clearing smoke to see an enormous flag flying proudly after a 25-hour British bombardment of Baltimore’s Fort McHenry. Key was inspired to write a poem, which was later set to music. Even before “The Star-Spangled Banner” became our national anthem, it helped transform the garrison flag with the same name into a major national symbol of patriotism and identity. The flag has had a colorful history, from its origins in a government contract through its sojourn with several generations of a Baltimore family to its eventual donation to the Smithsonian Institution.   www.francisscottkey.com

Many blessing to you and yours during this season of our Independence .

P.S. A I took all of the fireworks pictures at our local Weldon Spring 4th of July celebration this year and the flag image is from my 365 project last year.

Plants and Pests

Gardening is on of my favorite pastimes but those pesky, annoying enemies of the garden are a thorn in my side.  My husband is a hunter and has always wanted me to hunt with him but I just can’t bring myself to be there during the hunt.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against hunting, I just personally am not interested. However…when I go into my garden, first thing in the morning and my plants are eaten down to mere stubs all I can say is, somebody get me a gun!!  I’ve had it with these deer treating my beautiful plants like a salad bar! Ok, now I honestly would never shoot a deer but I’ve been tempted.  Sitting on my front porch swing just waiting.  Come on deer, I dare you.  The only weapon I’ve actually used against them is a product called Deer Off.  It works great but you have to reapply it after it rains and whatever you do, don’t stand downwind because you will smell like, well how do I say this…urine.  I guess that’s why it works.

If you read my blogpost called New Lens, then you saw the beautiful Tiger Lilies.  Just two days after taking those pictures, I came out the front door to see this!  The deer not only ate this one but every single Tiger Lily.  I was SO MAD as you can imagine.  I hadn’t sprayed Deer Off yet so I went to the garage to get the bottle from last year and the darn thing wouldn’t spray.  The nozzle was clogged.  But as I walked on the path to get to the garage I noticed more damaged.

They ate the Day Lilies in my front bed. The picture picture below is in the back yard which I sprayed BEFORE the deer got to them.

And then there’s the Japanese Beetles.  They like my fire bushes and basil.

As a matter of fact, these colorful beetles loved my basil so much they decided to have a little, ahem, “Party” on this fragrant herb.

Then these green caterpillars ate every single leaf off of Bella’s radishes before I caught one of them sneaking away.

Between the deer, caterpillars, beetles, and not to mention the moles, aphids, weeds and poison ivy, it’s a wonder anyone can get anything to grow in their garden.  As far as I’m concerned it’s all a part of the curse and will continue until Jesus returns.  So until then we’re all left to pull the weeds, spray Deer Off, trap the moles, spray RoundUp on the poison ivy, put out beetle traps and pluck off the caterpillars.

Best Inventions Ever

I’ve lived enough years to have tried and tested many different products from kitchens to clothing.  So I’m passing on to you, the reader of this blog, a few of my favorites which I call the Best Inventions Ever.  At the same time, I’m keeping the creative juices flowing with my love of photography.
This first one, The Magic Eraser, I’ve kept quietly under the kitchen sink only to get out and use to get scuff marks off my ceramic floor. Last week while removing a scuff mark off two tiles connected by the grout I noticed, much to my amazement, it cleaned the dingy grout!  In the 5 years since we’ve lived at this house, I’ve tried unsuccessfully, all sorts of ways to clean the eggshell colored grout which had become an ugly, dingy grey.  Ok, so we should never have picked that color in the first place but that’s not the point. The point is, I was so excited that I finally found something to clean the grout that I used three Magic Erasers working on my hands and knees to clean my entire kitchen floor!  A word of warning though, there are some surfaces you are not supposed to us it on because it will take off the finish.  So if you decide to try this product, read the label first.

The next item I discovered while on the HCG diet, which is a discussion for another day. Maybe.

This dressing is not only great on salads but also makes a tasty marinade for grilled chicken and it’s great when you’re counting calories or points. Walden Farms has many other dressings in this calorie free line but the only other one I’ve tried is the Raspberry Vinaigrette which is very yummy also. I did not like the Ranch Dressing though.  Those are the only three I’ve tried.  Some stores do not carry this brand, however I’ve bought it at Schnucks and Dierbergs in the produce section.

Last but not least, may I introduce you to the Invisibelt.

I’m not even sure how I discovered this but I wear it all the time.  If you’ve ever wanted to wear a blouse over your jeans or pants but hated that buckle bulge, then this is for you.  When I got it in the mail and opened it up I thought, “What a cheap little plastic thing.”  But this simple $20 belt works wonders for keeping your jeans up and getting rid of that annoying bump you get with regular belts.

Happy shopping!

Sister, “Sving” and Cicada’s

One of the many lessons I learned through my father’s illness and eventual death on May 1st of this year is how much I appreciate my family. Each one of my siblings has so many wonderful character qualities that I’ve come to admire.  My brother Joe has a quiet strength about him and yet is a man of deep integrity and moral character. I believe my brother Tom (actually, either one of my brothers) would give you the shirt off his back AND help you put it on in the process.  He is selfless, hard working and tenderhearted.  Both of my brothers have an incredible love of family and walk this out on a daily basis in different ways through the ups and downs of life. Oh, and then there is the love of motorcycles.  Harley’s to be exact. There’s just something about the open road, the wind at their back and the sound of those pipes that brings joy to their souls.

Just as I have come to admire my brothers for the men that they are, I have a new appreciation for my sisters.  At times I have been jealous of Vicki and Jill.  They each have strengths that through the sadness of losing our father I have come to admire.

Jill is the baby of the family.  Whatever she is involved in, is 110%!  And taking care of my dad this past year was no exception.  A nickname emerged for her through the whole ordeal…Bulldog.  Hopefully that gives you an idea of the passion at which she tackled any issue that would arise concerning Dad’s care. If something needed to be taken care of the Bulldog was on it!  I told Jill just the other day, after hearing her tell about leading a man to Christ over the internet, that I deeply admire her ability to “Live out loud.” There’s no holding back and no fear.  You go girl!!

Vicki is the oldest of my siblings, a manager by trade and used to fixing, organizing and administrating.  And I might add is very good at it!  She has helped my mother immensely through the maze of paperwork and legalities of dealing with the death of a spouse.  She is a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, faithful friend, career woman and part owner with her husband Dave of Allin’s Diner.  Whew, it makes me tired just typing all that!  Needless to say Vicki juggles it all very effectively and she’s always got a smile on her face which you’ll see in the pictures below.

I don’t want to lead anyone to believe that we are a perfect, flawless family which by the way doesn’t exist.  On the contrary.  Every last one of us are imperfect reflections of what we are meant to be. It’s just that I have a new love and appreciation for my siblings that maybe I hadn’t clearly understand before.

SISTER

My sister Vicki and I went to Main street in St. Charles to play with her new Pentax camera.  We had so much fun just walking around together, talking and laughing.  I was trying to pass onto her the little bit I’ve learned over the years about photography. Personally, I like learning from other photographers better than trying to learn from a book.  After I took this picture I looked at my viewfinder I said, “Man, you look like me!”  Although technically, I look like HER because she’s the older one.  Just sayin’.

Between Vicki and I, neither one of us can remember what was so funny at this moment. They say the memory is the first to go.

This is her new Pentax which by the way she is very excited about.  Every Jackson event is very well documented because we all love taking pictures!  It’s like we’re the paparazzi family.

There are so many great subjects to photograph on Main Street like this old wagon for example.

“SVING”

My very favorite subject to photograph just happens to also be my favorite little person in the whole wide world. When Bella come’s to our house, she loves to “sving.”  She usually starts in the baby sving, then wants to advance to the big girl sving then over to the glider where our little 4lb. dog Levi and I sit with her.  One of these days that old glider is going to plop right on the ground from a little too much weight.

She’s just so proud of herself on the big girl sving.

I know what she is saying at this exact moment…”Geese?” Because she says it about 100 times every time she’s at my house. Oh and she say’s “Horse Nap?” about 200 times.  There’s a lake behind our house where the geese frequently hang out and there is a small horse ranch on the other side of the lake.  When we can’t see the horses we just say they’re napping.

After svinging, Bella usually likes to jump on the trampoline which usually gives her this hairdo because of the static electricity.

Brace yourself.  These next few images are not for the squeamish.  So if you don’t like creepy crawly things then turn back now!

Cicada’s

If you haven’t seen the empty shells stuck on your trees and bushes then maybe you’ve heard the sound of these creatures.  If you were to pull into our driveway in the middle of the afternoon the sound from these 13 year Cicada’s is almost deafening and I’m not exaggerating! If you were to look up into our Cottonwood and Bradford Pear trees then you would see them flying from branch to branch. Or maybe you’ve seen the little holes all over the ground from where they have emerged from their 13 year slumber. It seems that we are stuck with these noisy little 2 inch insects for only a few weeks while they mate, drop eggs into the soil then die off until the next generation emerges in another 13 years.

All I can say is that must be one crazy 3 week party!  Geez guys, can you hold down the noise!

New Lens!!!

As a gift for completing the 365 Project my family made it possible for me to purchase a new 100mm 2.8 Canon Macro Lens!!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!  I love you guys!  Yesterday I went around my yard looking for subjects to photograph and the Tiger Lilies were happy to pose for me.

Here are some little know facts about these pretty flowers

* Tiger Lily has some toxic effects on cats. It can produce vomiting, in appetence, lethargy, kidney failure, and even death.

•  The Tiger Lily denotes wealth and prosperity.

•  When baked, lily bulbs taste rather like potatoes.

So keep your cats away from them then cook some for dinner.  Cook the Tiger lilies that is, not your cat.  Well you know what I mean.

Also, they are very easy to grow and they multiply each year.

This is called Pistil in the flower world.  Holy cow am I gonna love this new lens!!

The center of one of my Clematis growing on the arbor.

And this clematis bulb should be open in a day or two.

Up close and personal.

This lens has been on my wish list for some time now and I certainly wasn’t expecting to get it anytime soon. So thank you Tony, Sammy, TJ, Kacie, Bella, Andy and Chelsea.  Next to God you are my greatest source of encouragement and inspiration.  I love you!  Blessings on your head.

Lauren’s Senior Pictures

The day finally arrived to meet with Lauren in St. Charles to take her senior pictures.  We walked all around the riverfront and Main Street taking photos in various places battling the high winds and various costumed people who were reenacting the Civil War era. Two hours and one outfit change later we finished what we came to do.  Here are just a few of the shots from that windy afternoon.

Lauren is a beautiful and talented young lady.

As I said, we battled the wind all day but at times it worked to our advantage.

Not only is Lauren beautiful, she's musically talented!

Thank you to the Hyndman family for asking me to capture these images of your beautiful daughter.

New Beginnings

A little over a year ago I was inspired to start a project called 365 where I took a picture a day for a whole year. The movie Julie and Julia was my inspiration where the main character uses Julie Child’s cookbook as she cooks and blogs her way through the book in a year.  Well, I’ve photographed my way through a year and I’ve learned so much from the other creative photographers on the 365 site. Check out my page here. Through their lenses I gained a more creative eye and learned more about my camera and to be honest, I’ve even learned a few things about myself. One of which was struggling through a lot of my own insecurities.  Even though the project ended I continue to take photographs of the world around me and I’m in need of a creative outlet so I’m beginning this blog.

Recently a family from church was in need of someone to take Senior pictures of their graduating daughter so they asked me if I would take them for her.  It’s been about 5 years since I’ve had a photo session with anyone so I was quite nervous.  Two days before the session I called my daughter-in-law, Kacie and asked if she and Bella would like to come with me to Main Street in St. Charles to scope out a few places for taking pictures. The next three pictures are from that trip.

Bella…the joy of my life.

As we were walking back to our car we heard this sweet little voice behind us say, "Kacie?" Kiley and her mom Malorie were right behind us. Kiley is Bella's BFF!

I think they held hands almost the entire time they were together!
